Position Available — Managing Designer
91°µÍøÆƽâ°æ, an internationally recognized publisher of books for young readers based in Toronto, is seeking an exceptionally organized Managing Designer to work in a highly collaborative creative environment. The Managing Designer will be an integral part of the passionate team behind 91°µÍøÆƽâ°æ’s books, ensuring that design and artwork are delivered in a timely manner, providing creative input on books across our list, and designing a number of titles. This full-time role entails working directly with the design, editorial, marketing, and production staff and reports to the Art Director. Our offices are located in Toronto. We work within a very flexible, hybrid model. The successful applicant must be available to travel to the office occasionally as required, with the option of coming in regularly if desired.
Responsibilities include:
- managing the design schedules of the publishing list, working closely with the managing editor and art director to ensure projects are kept on track and in-house processes are followed. Tasks will include: working with managing editor to confirm deadlines for projects and set up a working schedule for each project; updating internal databases with design and art schedules; regularly monitoring deadlines and deliverables for the art department; creating and maintaining design style guides; building relationships with out-of-house freelancers
- actively working with the Managing Editor to initiate, improve, and implement new processes to facilitate communication and workflow of the creative team;
- designing approximately ten titles a year, including hardcovers, paperbacks, and ebooks for formats including picture books, middle grade, and young adult books, illustrated non-fiction, graphic novels, and other illustrated titles;
- helping the Art Director to identify, select, and liaise with illustrators, artists, and photographers, and managing the illustrator database
- reviewing colour correction, proofs, and special effects, and working on best practices for quality assurance of ebooks in cooperation with the Production department
- overseeing the work of freelance designers for some projects and ensuring consistency in the preparation of files for print, as well as compliance with 91°µÍøÆƽâ°æ style and design guides.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate:
- has 2+ years of previous design experience in book publishing
- must be comfortable in and enjoy working in a highly collaborative work environment
- has a knowledge of the children’s book market, a passion for children’s books, and a passion for innovative, creative thinking
- has a strong awareness of new art and design trends, artists, and illustrators
- has demonstrated typesetting and design skills, an excellent understanding of design programs, and proficiency in InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and other desktop publishing packages
- has knowledge of production as it relates to design, including knowledge of in-house proofing, colour printing, and ebook formats in the children’s marketplace
- has the skills to manage and organize with an ability to prioritize under tight deadlines
- has excellent time management and communication skills
- has a willingness to be flexible in developing new roles and workflow
- knowledge of graphic novel production an asset
- knowledge of font creation software an asset
